s | The best advice to a small business owner |
s | or for that matter a large business owner |
s | is never stop thinking about how to |
s | delight your customer. |
s | Not to satisfy your customer, |
s | but to delight your customer. |
s | When you wake up in the morning, |
s | start thinking about it. During the day, |
s | think about it. At night, think about it. |
s | And dream about it. And - no company's ever |
s | failed that had millions of delighted customers. |
s | And you start with them and you get them |
s | one at a time. |
s | There's no substitute for hard work. |
s | The best time you're ever gonna have is |
s | when it starts out just you and it'd be |
s | great if it grows into a wonderful big |
s | profitable company. But you're never gonna be |
s | happier and more satisfied than you are in |
s | the first year or so of getting your business going |
s | because you do every single thing. You sweep up |
s | when everybody goes home, |
s | you're the first one in, you plug in |
s | the coffee pot so when you're people come in, |
s | they have hot coffee and can get straight to work. |
s | Work through lunch, set an example for them, |
s | but there's no substitute for hard work. |
s | People say luck, yes, but the harder you work, |
s | the luckier you get. |
s | My advice to a small business owner or any |
s | entrepreneur would be not to be discouraged |
s | if the business you end up with is not the one |
s | you started out to pursue because |
s | so often, you encounter difficulties |
s | you encounter failures and |
s | the important piece is to learn from each of those |
s | very quickly and to pivot and to move on |
s | to the idea that works. |
s | Of course you have to be close to your |
s | products, close to your customers, and |
s | think about them. That's the most important. |
s | But don't forget to think about your |
s | business. What your plans are. What you |
s | wanna do next. How to take your business |
s | to the next level. Again, think about being |
s | in your business, but think about your |
s | business as well. |
s | My best advice is to really work |
s | hard to clarify what your purpose is |
s | and to be able to articulate that |
s | be able to communicate it |
s | in a simple sentence. |
s | And the reason that's important is |
s | as you bring people into your company, |
s | I think the most important question |
s | you ask them is, Why are you here? |
s | Why do you wanna join this company? |
s | And if you hear that purpose back, if |
s | you hear that passion around that purpose, |
s | it makes everything a whole lot easier. |
s | Any skill can be learned and taught, |
s | but passion cannot. |
s | Being an entrepreneur |
s | can be a rollercoaster ride at times. |
s | You will have great days, you will have |
s | not-so-great days, you may even from time |
s | to time have an awful day. |
s | You've got to stay focused and stay |
s | level headed and keep your feet on the ground. |
s | Companies that do well at some level |
s | even though it may not be written down |
s | on a piece of paper need to have |
s | kind of a clear strategy of why |
s | they're different, why they're adding |
s | value, why they're producing something special |
s | that customers need that they're not getting now. |
s | So, I think if there's a clear sense of |
s | strategy and you can get all the people |
s | aligned around that, then |
s | you get a lot more power than if you're just |
s | scrambling and working harder and harder |
s | and without that clear direction. So that's |
s | my one piece of advice. |
