Abtöten vs töten

Student: what is the difference between “abtöten” and “töten”?
Tutor: mhhhh, both verbs kill something, but what is the difference :thinking:

I had to consult the Internet and learned:
“abtöten” benutzt man nur für Schädlinge, Bakterien und Viren (used for tiny bugs only)
“Handdesinfektionsmittel tötet Bakterien auf der Hand ab”

There are similar words with very subtle differences, for example:
kommen / to come & ankommen / to arrive
denken / to think & nachdenken / to ponder

this topic is really interesting. Even though it’s my mother tongue, we often discuss the different meanings of German words :slight_smile:

For example:
“umfahren” (jemanden/etwas mit z.B. dem Auto umfahren)
“umfahren” (um etwas/jemanden herum fahren)

“ablaufen” (du kannst eine Strecke ablaufen)
“ablaufen” (das Haltbarkeitsdatum auf deinem Lebensmittel kann ablaufen oder die Zeit kann ablaufen)

“ansehen” (jemanden/etwas anschauen)
“Ansehen” (die Würde / die Reputation einer Person)
