False friends: "equal" vs. "egal"

One of those beautiful false friends between English and German is “equal” and “egal”

  • “equal” = gleich
  • “egal” = never mind

To put it into practice, here you have the first part of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights of the United Nations:

  • “All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights.”
  • “Alle Menschen sind frei und gleich an Würde und Rechten geboren.”

“egal” is often used as “it doesn’t matter” --> “Das Wetter ist mir egal. / Es ist mir egal, wo ich wohne.”
