One of those beautiful false friends between English and German is “equal” and “egal”
- “equal” = gleich
- “egal” = never mind
To put it into practice, here you have the first part of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights of the United Nations:
- “All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights.”
- “Alle Menschen sind frei und gleich an Würde und Rechten geboren.”
“egal” is often used as “it doesn’t matter” --> “Das Wetter ist mir egal. / Es ist mir egal, wo ich wohne.”
Was ist euch heute egal?
