A student asked me yesterday why do you say: “Das ist nicht genug”, but “Das reicht nicht” ( Das nicht reicht would be wrong ) 
I couldn’t think of a reason yesterday, but in the first example you negate an “Adverb” = gern “Wortstellung: „Nicht“ kommt vor das Adverb, das verneint werden soll.”
In the second example you negate a verb = “reichen” ( genug sein )
“Wortstellung: Wenn das konjugierte Hauptverb (das an 2. Stelle) verneint wird, steht „nicht“ am Ende des Satzes, weil das Verb auf P2 bleiben muss.”
