Habt ihr ein Lieblingswort auf Englisch?

Ich habe mir mal Gedanken darüber gemacht, was denn mein Lieblingswort auf Englisch ist. Es gibt einfach viel zu viele um nur einen Favorit zu haben, aber ich kann euch mal meine Top 3 sagen :laughing:

Ich habe Lieblingswörter aus unterschiedlichen Gründen. Manchmal gefällt mir die Bedeutung, oder die Melodie, oder die Form/Schreibweise,…

  • to discombobulate (v.) - dieses Wort klingt genauso wie seine Bedeutung: durcheinander bringen oder verwirren :dizzy_face:
  • sanguine (adj.) - kommt ursprünglich von ‘Blut’, hat aber nichts mehr damit zu tun. Es bedeutet jetzt nämlich optimistisch, vor allem in schwierigen Situationen.
  • tongue-in-cheek (adj., adv.) - okay, drei in einem, dieses Wort ist aber auch ein lustiges Bild. Wenn du etwas “Zunge-in-Backe” sagst, dann hast du eine gute Portion Ironie in deine Aussage gebracht :wink:

Ich könnte noch tausend weitere aufzählen… Was sind eure Lieblingswörter? Bin schon sehr gespannt!

English can’t compete with German when it comes to extremely long words.

Nonetheless, a great English word which has a very specific meaning (and who knows when you would actually use it!) is my favourite. It’s pretty hard to explain simply.

It relates to when someone opposes the belief that there should not be an official relationship between a government and the church, such as the Church of England and the UK government.

antidisestablishmentarianism

Now try and put that in a sentence :rofl:

Das sind echt coole Wörter, die ihr hier schon aufgelistet hat.

Einer meiner Lieblinge ist der Ausdruck to be in cahoots with so, was soviel bedeutet wie „mit jemanden gemeinsame Sache machen" oder „gemeinsam unter einer Decke stecken". Ich weiß nicht warum, aber ich finde den echt lustig :sweat_smile:

There aren’t many long words in English that are worth knowing – but if you’d like a long word to use in daily life might I suggest:

incomprehensibilities

It’s one of the few non-technical or non-medical words that has over 20 letters. I’m sure that can actually be used in a sentence :wink:

My favorite word is serendipity! I guess the combination of the definition and how it sounds makes it such a nice word :blush:

serendipity: the occurrence and development of events by chance in a happy or beneficial way: a fortunate stroke of serendipity | a series of small serendipities.

This is a fun thread so I wanted to add one of my favourite words - Onomatopoeia!

Onomatopoeia : the formation of a word from a sound associated with what is named (e.g bang, sizzle, pop).

So we basically have created a word based on the sound it makes. E.g a balloon pops because the sound when it pops is… pop! haha Hopefully you understand :wink:
