Hola a todos ,
One of the most common mistakes I usually hear is me recuerdo in order to say “I remember”. But no worries, I understand it can be confusing. Therefore, this post is going to be about the two different verbs we use to say “I remember” in Spanish.
First of all, it is important to notice that one of them is reflexive, and the other one is not:
-
ACORDARSE → (Yo) me acuerdo.
-
RECORDAR → (Yo) recuerdo.
Try not to mix these two: Me recuerdo.
Second of all, if you remember someone or something, these two can be followed by different words:
- ACORDARSE DE → Me acuerdo de ti. / Me acuerdo de la primera vez que comí Sushi.
EN
I rembember you.
I remember the first time I ate Sushi.
- RECORDAR A ALGUIEN / QUE / ALGO → Recuerdo a mi abuela y su cabello largo. / Recuerdo que te gustan las manzanas. / Recuerdo mi primer concierto en la ciudad.
EN
I remember my grandmother and her long hair.
I remember you like apples.
I remember my first concert in the city.
Last but not least, the verb “recordar” can also be: “to recall” or “to remind”. For example:
-
No recuerdo lo que pasó ayer → I can’t recall what happened yeterday.
-
Me recuerdas a mi hermana, ella también jugaba ajedrez → You remind me of my sister, she also played chess.
I hope those 3 key points will help you to understand the difference between “recordar” and “acordarse”.
