Konjunktiv II der Vergangenheit mit Modalverben

Hi,
I really don’t understand these examples. Could someone please translate them into English and I might then be able to work out what Chatterbug is trying to teach me.

Many thanks in advance.

Das hätte wirklich nicht sein müssen.

Du hättest anrufen sollen.

Sie hätte nicht gehen dürfen.

Hättest du das nicht gleich sagen können?

It means: It really didn’t have to be.

is:

You should have called.

She shouldn’t have gone.

You couldn’t have just said that?

I hope that helps.

Actually, could I ask something else about this?

So this example has now come up:

Ich hätte nicht auf ihn hören dürfen.
I should not have listened to him.

So why is ‘dürfen’ being used rather than ‘sollen’?

Thanks
