Same same but different: it's cold!

Hey Leute!

The temperatures are starting to drop here in Berlin, we even had a tiny mini bit of snow last week :snowflake:

Do you know more idioms to express low temperature?

Here in the Ecuadorian mountains we also say “hace un frío bestial” (bestial cold).

In Spain, we say hace un frío que pela (lit. meaning: it’s so cold that it peels) or hace un frío del carajo (carajo means penis, but also damn, f *** ing, sh * t).

Some German expressions I use a lot in winter:

  • “Es ist eiskalt.” = It is icy cold. :snowflake:
  • “Es ist arschkalt.” = It is “ass cold”. This is very informal but when you really hate the cold weather as much as I do this is a good way of expressing your pain

However my personal favourite will always be “Achachay!”, a Quechua expression I learned when I was living in the Andes Mountains in Ecuador :mount_fuji:

“It’s cold-cold”
Where I live, we have a tendency to emphasise a word by doubling it up. One could say, it’s stupid-stupid
