Have you ever wondered how many words you know in the languages you speak? There are quick tests you can take online and check it out.

The good news is: to be completely fluent and functional in a language you don’t need the imposing 20-30 thousand words a native speaker usually understands. I use English on a daily basis to communicate with the Chatterbug team and yet according to this test, I “only” know a little over 8k words!

Ich muss mal sagen, dass ich ein bisschen skeptisch bin, weil ich viermal mehr Woerter als mein Wortschatz auf Chatterbug habe, aber jetzt kann ich besser schlafen… auf Deutsch meine ich

It gave me 14200 words. Haha there are some really weird words in those lists!

Der Grund, warum dein Wortschatz eigentlich größer als dein “Chatterbug-Wortschatz” ist, ist leicht zu erklären. Mit Chatterbug lernst du meistens Lexeme (die Grundform eines Wortes). Aus diesem Lexem kannst du aber wiederum viele neue “Wörter” bilden und verstehen. Zum Beispiel, wenn du das Lexem “Liebe” kennst, verstehst du mithilfe von Grundkenntnissen in Wortbildungsprozessen die Wörter “liebevoll”, “beliebt”, “unbeliebt”, … und mit der Kombination aus zwei bekannten Wörtern (oder Lexeme) kannst du exponentiell noch mehr Wörter bilden, wie “Liebesbeziehung”, “Liebesbrief”, etc.
The good news is, you don’t have to memorize 8000 words to know 8000 words. Depending on the morphological structure of the language you are learning, some of the lexemes you learn will be extremely productive to understand several dozens of new words instantly, just by learning one!! This is one of the beauties of the German language.
