I found this funny explanation about the word ‘gerade’ on Reddit under the title ‘Geradeception’:

The German word ‘gerade’ can mean:

  • straight
  • right now
  • especially

The word “die Gerade” means:

  • straight line

So, the sentence, “Ich fragte gerade, warum gerade diese Gerade so gerade ist” means:
“I just wondered why especially this line is so straight.”

Typical sentences using “gerade”:

straight:
Passantin, die nach einer Wegbeschreibung gefragt wurde: “Gehen Sie geradeaus bis zur Kreuzung und biegen Sie dann links ab. Dort ist das Rathaus.”

straight line:
Mathematiklehrer*in in der 1. Klasse beim “Linealführerschein”: “Die Linien sind aber nicht gerade. Versuche die Übung noch einmal.”

right now:
Schüler*in: “Dazu habe ich aber gerade keine Lust”.

especially:
Schülerin: "Gerade Sie als Lehrerin wissen doch, wie schwer das ist."

By the way:
If you say “jemand ist sehr geradeaus” you call her/him a very honest and open person!

The Duden mentions both words.

  • “geradeaus” is a characteristic of a person
  • “geradeheraus” refers to the way how you say something
