I was asked for a German word for time slot and couldn’t think of one :thinking:, but of course we have one :wink:

  • das Zeitfenster = time slot :timer_clock: :slot_machine:
    …and here are other words with “time”:
  • die Zeitumstellung = change of time
  • die Zeitenwende = turn of eras
  • der Zeitplan ( Terminplan ) = schedule
  • die Jahreszeit = season
    …maybe you can think of more words?

That’s a good one! It’s also used as a general greeting at lunchtime! Even if nobody’s eating (yet). Especially in a work environment it’s quite commonly used.

Here are some adjectives that can all be translated with “timely” (but the context differs):

  • zeitig = at a relatively early stage - “Morgen stehe ich zeitig auf.”

  • rechtzeitig = at the right time (so that it is still early enough) - "Ich bin (gerade noch) rechtzeitig gekommen

  • zeitgemäß = according to a time (e.g. the 1920’s); also currently / referring to this time - “Diese Mode ist heute nicht mehr zeitgemäß.”

  • zeitnah = 1. fast [following]; immediately / 2. contemporary [and time-critical] - 1. “Wir müssen den Bericht zeitnah abgeben.” / 2. “Das Theaterstück ist total modern und zeitnah.”

  • zeitgerecht = appropriate to the requirements and expectations of today - “Ein Haus mit einem offenen Kamin heizen ist wirklich nicht mehr zeitgerecht!”

Made me think of more words with “zeit” :timer_clock: :thinking::

  • die Freizeit = downtime
  • der Zeitraum = time period
  • der Zeitpunkt = specific moment in time
  • die Spielzeit = playing time …this one can be used in different ways, here are some examples:
    “Der Spieler war sauer ( angry ), weil er so wenig Spielzeit bekam” :soccer:
    “Die neue Spielzeit beginnt im August” :musical_score:…Zeitabschnitt innerhalb eines Jahres, während dessen in einem Theater Aufführungen stattfinden
    …or in a movie theatre " Die Spielzeit des Films war nur eine Woche" :movie_camera:
