One of my absolute favourites is “Lautmalerei” (literally “sound painting”). I think the Greek word is used in English: onomatopoeia
It describes a linguistic phenomenon that is present in every language, as far as I know. It basically means that a word incorporates the sound it is describing. As we are all bee-people here, let’s use bees as an example:
to buzz - the “zz” sound in the word is the sound the word is describing. It can be used in phrases such as “the buzzing of the bees”, “busy bees”(here the “s” sounds like “z”) and we use these words and phrases in relation to bees because they make these “buzzing” sounds.
I just really love the German word for this. It sounds so nice and elegant
German as a language is really fond of compounds, and if there is concept for which there is no word, well, then we just make the word by combining other words It’s so much fun!
