Conjunctive II: Modal verb
Share this article with others:
Remember we talked about
Konjunktiv II
not too long ago? Now you can say things like...
Ich
würde
gehen
, aber ich habe viel zu tun.
I
would go
, but I have lots to do.
In most cases, all you need is
werden
(conjugated in Konjunktiv II) and the infinitive.
Modal verbs don't belong to "the most cases" category. We usually use the following forms.
können
Ich kann
→
Ich
könn
t
e
müssen
Ich muss
→
Ich
müss
t
e
dürfen
Ich darf
→
Ich
dürf
t
e
sollen
Ich soll
→
Ich
soll
t
e
Just add a «
t
» to the
base form
and
conjugate
as usual!
Ich wünschte, ich
könnte
länger
bleiben
.
I wish I could stay longer.
Wenn du Urlaub hättest,
müsstest
du nicht
arbeiten
.
If you had leave, you wouldn't have to work.
Er wünschte, er
dürfte
hier
rauchen
.
He wishes he were allowed to smoke here.
Sie
sollte
heute
einkaufen gehen
.
She should go shopping today.
Remember that
Modalverben
need to be combined with an
infinitive verb
to work. They can't stand alone... they are very needy ;)!
Remember: Unlike the present tense endings, the
er/sie/es
forms don't end with a «t»:
sie solltet
→
sie sollte
