"wenn" vs "als"
„Als ich ein Kind war, sagte meine Mutter zu mir: «Wirst du Soldat, so wirst du General werden. Wirst Du Mönch, so wirst du Papst werden.» Ich wollte Maler werden und ich bin Picasso geworden.”

Wenn and als are perhaps the most commonly mistaken conjunctions in German, but the difference between them isn't difficult at all!
Let's compare:
Als ich ein Kind war, wollte ich Maler werden.
When I was a child, I wanted to become a painter.
…
Wenn ich Hunger habe, esse ich ein Apfel.
When I'm hungry, I eat an apple.
- Wenn and als are used to indicate that two actions are happening or happened at the same time. However:
- Als is only used when one of those things happened only once in the past. In the example above, Picasso was a child only once. Hence: Als ich ein Kind war, ...
- Wenn is used in all the other cases, for things that happened more than once in the past, things that happen regularly, things that will happen once or more than once in the future.
