Frequently Asked Questions
- Bildungsurlaub (lit. 'education holiday') is a legal entitlement in Germany that allows employees to take paid leave from work (in addition to vacation allowance) to attend certified educational courses.
- Most employees in Germany are eligible for Bildungsurlaub, but the exact rules vary by federal state. Generally, you need to have been employed for at least six months. If you're unsure, check your state's specific requirements or ask your employer to confirm your eligibility.
- Each day, you'll take 5 Live Lessons on the Chatterbug platform, which are 45-minute online video sessions, one-to-one with a Chatterbug tutor. In each lesson, your tutor will guide you through fun, conversational exercises from our built-in curriculum, all designed to get you speaking as much as possible.
- Throughout each day, you'll also complete interactive self-study activities to support your Live Lessons. These include flashcards, reading & writing exercises and media. Chatterbug personalizes the exercises based on your learning, to optimally prepare you for your next lessons.
- When you've finished the course, we'll issue you a completion certificate that you can pass on to your employer.
- We currently offer officially recognized Educational Leave Courses for English and German learners at all levels (A1 - C2)
- If you're looking to study French or Spanish, and your employer is happy to grant leave on discretion (or based on a recognition for a different language), please get in touch. We'll see if we can accommodate you!
- Chatterbug's English course is recognised in:
- Berlin
- Brandenburg
- Hamburg (via another state's recognition under §15 of the Hamburger Bildungsurlaubsgesetz)
- Rheinland-Pfalz
- Thüringen
- Niedersachsen

- Chatterbug's German course is officially recognised in:
- Recognitions coming very soon! You can still request a course to join the waiting list, and we'll notify you when the recognition for your state is available
- You can download our recognition documents in advance here.
- If your state isn't on the list, we encourage you to enquire with your employer anyway. Employers are able to grant educational leave without a recognition at their discretion and many will accept recognitions from other states.
- Fill out the form at the top of this page to request a course. Afterwards, you'll be prompted to set up your Chatterbug account.
- The team will check tutor availability for your preferred start date. Once we've confirmed this, you'll receive an email containing our recognition document and a payment link.
- Pass the recognition document on to your employer and confirm your time off with them.
- As soon as your time off is confirmed, please pay for your course via the payment link you received. Note that we can only guarantee your spot after payment has been received.
- A Learning Experience (LX) advisor will get in touch to prepare you for your course and schedule your Live Lessons.
- You're all set! Just log in to Chatterbug at the time of your first Live Lesson and you'll be prompted to join the session.
